Kampung Inggris - Pare, East Java

Have you ever heard Kampung Inggris? It is located in Pare, Kediri, East Java. The area is named Kampung Inggris as there are a lot of English courses here.

This Kampung Inggris is believed to be initiated by a migrant from Kalimantan, Mr Kalend Osen in 1977. Having studied English with Ustadz Yazid, the founder of Darul Falah Islamic boarding school in Kediri,  who could speak 7 languages, Mr Kalend started his own English course named BEC, Basic English Course. At that time he really wanted to make people learn and speak English as it would be important in the future.

Most people felt reluctant to learn English although it was free. Even, pedicab drivers would be paid for Rp 15,000 each if they were willing to learn English. Most people thought that English was not important since they wouldn't ever go up to England.

Time went by, many ustadz Yazid'z students studied English to Mr Kalend until they mastered the language. But, there was such a rule that those who had mastered English had to teach other students. And finally, the number of people who wanted to learn English went up. As the result, more students came to learn English here. It was how Kampung Inggris was formed and it  has now developed rapidly with more foreign students from Timor Leste, Malaysia and Thailand came here for study.

Compared to many English courses available in Indonesia now, Kampung Inggris offers a competitive, relatively cheap, tuition. Even many courses provide their own dormitory for those who are from other areas. The course fee ranges from Rp 35,000 to hundred thousands per month.

Hopefully, the presence of English courses in Saumlaki today can make Saumlaki the MTB's Kampung Inggris.
